Pichwais are meant to capture seasons, rituals, occasions, and expressions, or “Bhav” involved in the daily worship of Shrinathji. The pichwais with the lotus motif or “Kamal Talai Pichwais” are used during the hot, summer months to create a cool atmosphere in the sanctum of the Lord. A pichwai inspired from the popular theme of "Kamal Talai", or Lotus Pond - this artwork is symbolic of the banks of the Yamuna River, where young Krishna spent much of his childhood with his beloved "Gopis", or maidens in the lands of Vraj.
The painted Lotus pichwais were first introduced in the 18th century by artists who utilized the metaphor observed in the “Ashtachhapa” poems, which compares Krishna to a bee and the gopis to lotus blooms.
