GAZING INTO THE ABYSS

Designed exclusively for The House Of Things, Duffy London’s latest table is inspired by the spectacular topography of Pondicherry.

Synonymous with the quirky and the eccentric, Christopher Duffy’s work is inspired by concepts of gravity, illusion, and geometry. The designer’s brainchild, Duffy London Design Studio boasts furniture wizardry with designs exceptional enough to make one’s jaw drop. His work is always infused with the perfect alchemy of classic and timeless pieces mixed with an element of the unexpected.

“My only philosophy is to design something that gets me excited and to be as original as is possible. I then send it out into the world to see if it reflects the personality of anyone else, and to see whether they feel that owning one of my pieces would help them express who they are,” asserts Duffy.

Favouring the juxtaposition of texture and design, and driven by a strong artistic instinct, Duffy sees every space as a visual landscape of opportunity, and a means to explore individual style. Fashioning remarkably unique designs out of thin air, like the convivial Swing Table, the Up Balloon Table that floats on a host of balloons, or the Civilization Series that pay homage to the monuments constructed of yore, Duffy has pushed the envelope of design yet again with the latest iteration to the Abyss Series – the Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ Table – a limited edition piece designed exclusively for The House Of Things.

A beautiful and unique collector’s item with long-term investment potential, the Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ Table is limited to just 10 breathtaking editions.

The Abyss series features creations that are each a pièce de résistance, in their own way. “I was looking into sheets of thick glass at the glass manufacturer’s factory, and noticed how the material darkened as they added layers – the same way the sea does as it deepens”, explains Duffy. “I wanted to use this effect to replicate a real piece of the Earth’s seabed; like a mythical power had lifted a rectangle straight from the Earth’s crust to use as his personal ornament.”

THE ABYSS ‘PONDICHERRY’

An endlessly astonishing design, the Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ is designed exclusively for The House Of Things and is limited to an edition of 10 pieces - a 6-seater dining table that combines Duffy’s essential oeuvre with the added value of Pondicherry’s topographical inflatus.

As enthralling as the oceanic coastal depths of the Oussudu Lake, the largest lake in Pondicherry, this table is a conversation starter, albeit a functional one.

A continuation of Duffy’s exploration of the concept of depth and its perception, Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ is raised to dining or boardroom level at 75 cms high and makes a stunning statement placed anywhere. A mesmerising portrayal of the Oussudu, or Ousteri Lake, the largest lake in Pondicherry, played out in a vivid interplay of colours and grounded in a choice of either mirror polished stainless steel or matte black steel, the table features intricate layers of glass and wood placed strategically to create a three-dimensional viewing canvas; the natural colour of the wood inspired by the au naturel colour palette seen in the Tamil quarter of Pondicherry, and the turquoise hues, reminiscent of the deep coastal blues of the Oussudu Lake.

Speaking to the geological cross sections seen in the aquatic depths of the lake, the piece is crafted from high grade wood and sculpted glass. Image courtesy: Duffy London

Developed by the skilled craftsmen in the London studio, the table features sections of glass and wood built on top of one another to create a visually impacting, 3D version of a geological map, which rests on a central supporting slab. Areas of the tabletop with more layers are used to create the illusion of underwater chasms, while the unique shape amplifies the prodigious effect.

The Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ Table is hand made to order in London from sustainable materials such as glass and high grade wood sourced from Forest Stewardship Council managed forests and other controlled forces, and is limited to an edition of only 10 pieces.

We are delighted to unveil this gorgeous design created by Christopher Duffy, the master of contemporary elegance. Abyss ‘Pondicherry’ further reveals the designer’s signature luxe aesthetic and understated chic.
