HOW TO STYLE A MAXIMALIST CORNER WITH DOMINIQUE JEAN LAVABRE

AN INTRODUCTION

Born in France, multi-faceted designer Dom Jean Lavabre escaped the corporate life before establishing his eponymous design studio in 2016 - ASTANA Dom Jean Lavabre Design Studio.

Enchanted by India’s colors, spirituality, energy and myriad of cultures, the artist found his home in an old haveli, amidst the narrow streets of Udaipur’s old town. The artist’s residence along with his lifestyle is a reflection of his love and appreciation for heritage and history.

Being a self taught designer, Dom’s style molds around the relationship between the object and its enveloping environment. For each project, he follows a keyword as his guiding principle, to create spaces that narrate a story. From France to India, one thing that remains common in his design adventures is his ability to reconstruct every corner with a historic charm. His aesthetics transcend functionality, as each element in his design participates in crafting an experience.

For our styling stories, Dom creates an eclectic corner, layered with not just an inspiring palette of colours but also art from different eras and styles. The artist’s design philosophy is not limited to a selective aesthetic but following a process of overlaying one element over another, each inspired from one statement piece tying the look together.

With this masterpiece, showcasing spellbinding artwork by the infamous Henry Matisee; Dom authors a look drawing inspiration from the painting’s deep hues and bold style.

“I believe it’s always the process”

The busy and colourful carpet forms the first layer of the look. This inspiring medley then starts taking shape as the contemporary furniture pieces engender a refined silhouette. A center table with a diaphanous aesthetic enhances functionality without stealing the spotlight from the hero piece - the cabinet.

“Even though each artwork on the wall narrates an entirely different story, the most enthralling part of the setup is the conversation woven together by the yellow, red and blue hues.”

“When you’re stuck somewhere, use black. And you will find just the perfect exit.”

The vibrant ensemble is complemented by rich brass accessories and black accents à la sophistication. The artist uses black as a means of unification - bringing harmony to this eccentric corner.

This constellation of miscellaneous elements creates an environment that adheres to what the artist seeks in crafting his interior settings -
