INSIDE AN AFRICAN TENTED CAMP THAT GLOWS WITH TEXTURE AND CHARACTER

AFRICAN BUSH CAMPS – KHWAI LEADWOOD TENTED CAMP – MOREMI GAME RESERVE – BOTSWANA

Energised by creative experiences, South African designer Christopher Browne and Debra Fox started Fox Browne Creative in 2009. Their vision goes well beyond the bush; with a belief in tactile interiors, an inherent creative vocabulary, and a touch of humour in all designs, the designer’s roster includes top safari lodges, residences, and hospitality projects in Africa, UK, USA, India, Latin and South America.

“I always was interested in design from a very young age and would spend hours sketching imaginary houses. After a very brief stint in design school, I travelled the world and by chance found my way into the Safari Lodge design world on my return to South Africa”, says Chris of his design background.

The designer’s most recent hospitality project was the exceptional Leadwood Tented Camp situated in Botswana. Set within the Okavango Delta’s community-run Khwai Concession, this beautiful camp is tucked on the edge of the Khwai River.

“Our inspiration came from classic safari style re-imagined in a clean, sculpted, and masculine way”, says Chris. “The brief was to develop an intimate 8 bedroom tented camp in line with an ethos of delivering authentic African experiences with heartfelt hospitality.”

Set against the impressive location of the Moremi Game Reserve, the space boasts the perfect balance between luxury and comfort.

The open interior layout allows for unobstructed views of all of a hotel’s whimsical elements, as well as panoramic scenery.
Located in the wilderness surrounding the Moremi Game Reserve, this dreamy design features the impossible combination of the whimsical yet earthy, primitive yet modern, sumptuous yet simple, all at once. There’s a certain rawness to it, from its wooden textures, tented silhouette, stacked baskets, and rustic cave-inspired interiors to its natural views.

The architecture itself is intriguing; with its natural palette of materials that includes tented roofs, stacked basket ware, and picturesque views.
In creating his plan for this project, Chris began to think what travellers would like to experience on an African safari. “We had to create a different look compared to the other African Bush Camp properties so guests could experience something different on this safari itinerary.”

The solution he devised was to combine the elements of the earth – represented here by timber, raw wood, and hand beaten metals to manifest the power of the camp’s location, reminding of the great African Outdoors. The underbelly of the water lily and winter Savannah grass seen here suggested the warm colour palette of the space. Weaving in a cultural element without expropriating, the designer used the iconic Kavango baskets juxtaposed with modern elements to create an authentic yet contemporary African experience.

Colour, pattern, and texture take centre stage in this well-appointed camp, defined with unique interiors and a refined safari spirit.
The Botswanan Bush Camps brand identity weaves nostalgia through the guest experience, so original, vintage furnishings and natural materials feature strongly. Channelling the soul of an entire setting seems key for Browne.

“I believe in creating comfortable spaces that speak to a sense of place. When I design, it all starts with the guest. Through it all, I always maintain a sense of humour in each of my designs.”

A mix of contemporary forms and shapes in the bespoke designed furniture add moments of classical safari to the living experience.

Hand-selected antique pieces and woven basket-ware create a calm and thoughtful space, reminiscent of a classic safari with a modern edge. Great detail went into crafting the guest experience and designing the hospitality concept from food through to service, to complement the look and feel of the interiors and, most importantly, to offer the guests an experience where every detail has been thought of.

The concept to create a modern space with an ethnic edge was inspired by nature, with a dash of playfulness that is contemporary yet sophisticated.
Of the design scene in Africa, Chris says that it is constantly evolving; modern interiors now own their sense of “Africanness” instead of trying to emulate European or American design. His philosophy - that good design with a little humour never hurt anybody, is writ large on the spaces he creates.
