Designed by Shabnam Gupta, Peacock Life Living is an enchanting little vacation home stay composed of two cottages enveloped by a serene valley and lush greens. Making a case for slow living, it is situated in the small town of Karjat, just two hours’ drive from the thriving behemoth that is Mumbai. Largely untouched by urbanism and hyper metropolitan environs, Karjat is a microcosm of biological diversity and verdant hillsides coupled with fertile red soil and affable weather.

Peacock Life Living is located in one corner of a vast piece of land, a 2-bedroom, single storey cottage is reminiscent of Gupta’s “concept of veranda living”, annexed by a pantry for quick meals.

As is evident by her interiors, Shabnam prefers mixing to matching. She believes that pieces should “flow together, not go together. Pulling together a functional space for her growing team during the Covid outbreak, Shabnam ensured that the space fit into its surrounding context, opting to go for local wherever possible.

The materials she used included Kadappa stone and Mangalore tiles, concrete and wood, with a healthy mix of kitschy items from the designer’s store, Peacock Life Living. The use of texture and colour palette nod to an India Luxe aesthetic, which captured a deliberate aesthetic that is so distinct – that in curating a space that exhibits her personal narrative, courtesy of sculptural furniture, eccentric bookcases filled with art and coffee-table books, quirky art, and handsome foliage.

With pink serving as the dominant hue showcased throughout the bungalow, with handpainted murals featuring abundant flora and fauna. Seen here: The Moon Room and en-suite bathroom.

“We taught our village boys how to remove cement dye and for the locals to do our entire exterior cladding in concrete-dye flowers,” exerts the designer. Nature has played a bold role in serving as a catalyst in a rather unusual form of expression. With several Bougainvillaea trees in bloom, pink remained a dominant hue throughout the décor of the space. With handpainted murals raining down flyaway flora and fauna in bright shades, there is ample wildlife art showcased at the space. The Moon Room boasts romantic hues of soft pink caressing the décor, along with flyaway cranes and lotuses.

The Tiger Room features slate blue painted walls which seem almost as if floating in the sky, accented with cherry blossoms, and offbeat wooden sculptures adding a hint of quirk.

A hideaway amidst nature, this quaint vacation stay is ideal for couples and friends alike, who are looking for a respite from the city’s bustling life. With a vision to explore beyond the two rooms it currently has, Shabnam wishes to retain its current aspect while still being a slow hideaway meant to soothe the soul.
